There are a number of configuration changes that are recommended for the Micro WiDirect and Micro WiClient. Some of these changes may have already been applied to the Micro before shipping.

Set Proper Time at Startup

The Micro WiDirect can be configured to get the correct time when it starts up. To configure the WiDirect to retrieve the time from an NTP server at startup first run this command:

sudo emacs /etc/rc.d/rc.local

At the end of the file add this line:

ntpdate -u

To exit the emacs text editor press control-x followed by control-c.

Automatic Restart

The Micro WiDirect can be configure to automatically restart in the event of a system crash. SSH to the WiDirect using the username "portal" and the password "widirect". Then run these commands:

su -
(enter password widirect)
emacs /etc/sysctl.conf

Add a line at the bottom that says "kernel.panic=2" and then save+exit by pressing Control-X, followed by Control-C. To make that setting take effect immediately without restarting run this command:

sysctl kernel.panic=5

Automatic Firewall Restart

The Micro WiDirect may benefit from having the firewall automatically restart at certain intervals. To enable the automatic restart run these commands:

su -
crontab -e

Add the line below to restart the firewall daily at 3 AM. It is using the vi editor, so to start typing text first press the "i" key. To save and exit press escape followed by ":wq".

0 3 * * * /sbin/service awicp_client restart
0 3 * * * /sbin/service awicp_client_radius_listener restart

Restarting the firewall should cause very little interruption of service. Users who are actively connected won't notice any interruption. New users won't be able to login for a few seconds.
